Angostura bitters are extremely concentrated and, though 44.7% alcohol by volume, are not normally drunk pure, but used in small amounts as flavouring.[7]

Angostura bitters are alleged to have restorative properties. It was reported to be a remedy for hiccups,[8] and also can be used as a cure for an upset stomach.[9]
